The United Bucking Horse Association was part of The Big Time Bucking Horse Futurity’s event this past July. The Big Time Bucking Horse Futurity was started 4 years ago by Trevor & Melissa Smith and Cevey Pennington, in an effort to add a crowd pleasing event to the Elbert County Fair, held annually, in Kiowa Colorado. In just a few short years, The Big Time Bucking Horse Futurity has grow into one of the largest UBHA sanctioned futurities in the country and offers the richest pot paid back to the winning contractors. The Big Time also hosts a team event for four and five-year-old horses to compete with riders, where each team of horses is made up of two saddle broncs and one bareback.
In 2015, The Big Time Bucking Horse Futurity also hosted the only open qualifier event for the Mini Bareback World Championships. Which will be held in conjunction with the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas this December. Trevor and Melissa are passionate about this event and what it offers to the bucking horse industry. Not only do they see it as a way to develop young horses, but also, gives contractors a chance to showcase their genetics. Having grown up around cattle and race horses, the bucking horses are new to the Smiths, who now own a small group of two-year-old bucking horses. “After hosting the first Big Time Bucking Horse Futurity in 2012, I was really intrigued with these young horses and wanted to buy in so that we could compete ourselves,” says Trevor. “It’s been a lot of fun and a lot of work to make this event what it is. But the results have been worth the effort!”
The competition was tough this year. Contractors of the UBHA came in from as far as Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas and everywhere in between. Hyna, a horse owned by Johnson/GF Buckers, won the yearling class with 88 points. Rock N Roll Gypsy, a filly belonging to Skip & Elaine Jones, was 2nd with 84 points. And Joe Waln’s, Saya’s Eyes and Johnson/GF Buckers, Downtown Dayne split 3rd with 82 points.
In the 2yr old class. It was Chrome Cowboy of GF Buckers/South and Cindy Lou Hoo of GF Buckers/Smith, who smoked the competition with 89 points to split 1st and 2nd. No Name/No Brand, of Royce Ford was 3rd with 84 points.
88 points is what it took for the win in the 3yr old class. Choctaw Bing owned by Skip & Elaine Jones got the big win. No Name/Brand 204, from B/J Bucking Horses, was 86 points, followed by BFSOB of Waln Rodeo, finishing third with 85 points.
