Meet the Rodeo: Scott County Stampede

The last time KPRA was present at Scott City, Kan., was in 1996. “That was the last time we had a rodeo during the fair,” said Kurt Logan, the chairman of the rodeo committee. “They switched to ranch rodeos after that.”
For the last few years, the committee has been working with the KPRA to get it back. “The community is really excited to have it back in the Fair schedule. That night (Thursday, July 21), we have a free barbeque and so everyone can come eat and then watch the rodeo.” The rodeo is held in conjunction with the Scott County Free Fair. The Fair is unusual in the fact they accept open as well as 4-H. “We are really lucky with the Extension and the Fair Board with the cooperation to get everything together.”
There is $4,000 added for this rodeo. “We have the support of the community, so we are lucky they are backing this,” said Kurt, who farms and runs cattle, and is a life-long resident of Scott County, located in west central Kansas. “We are three counties in from the Colorado line.”
The stock will come from Madison River, Mike Greenleaf. “I think it’s a great deal. They’ve got a great facility and we are thrilled to be part of it. We hope to build it into a premier KPRA rodeo. They’ve sure put up good money for a first rodeo.”
