The town of St-Andre-Avellin, Quebec, is located an hour east of Ottawa, Ontario, and has been hosting an annual rodeo for 15 years. “The first rodeo was at the baseball stadium and we had to take part of the grass out of the field for the arena. It poured rain and they packed the stands. They moved the stadium after five years and bought their own bleachers that hold about 4,500 people,” said Sylvain Bourgeois, owner of Wildtime Production, “Friday and Saturday night are sold out and we added a Sunday performance two years ago. It’s one of the best crowds we go to over the summer.”
Five years ago the three day rodeo was expanded to a 10 day festival. The first weekend of the festival features a gymkhana event and horse pull, a concert is held each week night and the rodeo is the capstone event. The rodeo was held July 24-26 and was the fourth qualifier in the Canada Cup Series. Wildtime Productions provided stock for the rodeo. In the bareback riding, Danian Nutt took home top honors with an 80 point ride. Rod Weese flipped his steer in 3.8 seconds for first place in steer wrestling. With matching 77 point scores, Peter Hallman and Ben Maytom tied for first place in the saddle bronc riding. Caddo Lewallen had his hands in the air in 8.3 seconds to garner first place in the tie-down roping. Hayley Jo Knox turned in a 2.9 second run for first place in the cowgirl’s breakaway roping. In the barrel racing Kim Desilet turned in a time of 14.826 for the win. With 82 points, Garrett Tribble took top honors in the bull riding. For full rodeo results, please visit www.ipra-rodeo.com.
