Meet the Member Sam & Cassidy Beasley

For Mid-States Rodeo Association members, Sam and Cassidy Beasley, rodeo and horses are a major part of life. Sam’s family transplanted to Michigan from Illinois 11 years ago, and Cassidy came to Michigan with her family close to 15 years ago. The couple married two years ago and have a one-year-old daughter named Abilene Rose. The couple has taken the experience they gained from their own families and upbringing with horses and combined it to own and operate Diamond B Horses & Livestock together. Sam buys and sells horses and livestock, and Cassidy trains and sells performance horses.
Growing up, Sam’s parents, Randy and Lisa Beasley, were very involved in draft horse pulling competitions, mainly working with Belgian draft horses. “I spent many years showing draft horses in pulling competitions when I was younger, but it took a lot of time, and once I started team roping, I had to pick one or the other, so I stuck with roping.” Sam was grateful to have an indoor arena, Chase Valley Ranch owned by Fred Johnson, just across the field from his family home. “I spent three or four nights a week roping over there and it was so nice to have a place like that close by.” Sam competed for 3 years in the Illinois High School Rodeo Association before moving to the Michigan High School Rodeo Association for his senior year. He went to nationals his junior and senior year, qualifying in team roping and steer wrestling. Following high school, he’s continued to amateur rodeo and compete at jackpots. Sam heels, and has competed in the MSRA for 10 years now, qualifying for the season finals 8 times since 2009. “My main partner is Steve Shattuck; we go to a lot of jackpots and rodeos together and it’s nice to ride along with a veteran of the sport.” With the nature of the Beasley’s business, most horses are for sale and don’t stay around long, but for the past two years, Sam has heeled on a bay gelding named Biscuit that he is grateful to have stumbled across.
Cassidy just completed her rookie season with the MSRA and finished the season as the reserve champion rookie breakaway roper, and 4th place in breakaway roping for the year-end. “It was a really fun first year, the last round of finals my nerves got to me, but I was glad to finish as well as I did.” Cassidy competes as a barrel racer in addition to breakaway roping and comes from a family with a diverse involvement in the equine industry. “We moved from Broken Bow, Nebraska so that my mom could help run the St. John’s Horse Auction in St. John’s, Michigan. We always had a ton of horses around, and my mom, Wendy Koubek, showed Paint horses, while my dad, Skip Koubek, showed cutters and reiners. I have 4 sisters and 3 brothers in our blended family, and some of them did rodeo and that’s what took my interest.” Cassidy started competing in rodeo in 7th grade and competed in the Michigan High School Rodeo Association until she graduated in 2014. “During high school I competed in barrel racing, breakaway roping, goat tying, pole bending, and cutting.” Since graduating, Cassidy has focused on training horses and has enjoyed competing in local rodeos and jackpots.
The Beasley family plans to continue the rodeo tradition with the next generation of their family and looks forward to another season with the MSRA. They stay busy putting on team roping jackpots in addition to their horse and livestock business. Their main goals for now are being good parents and building a new house for their family. “God is so great, and we are such a blessed family. He has been so good to us and we are just so thankful that God lets us live our dreams every single day. Most people don’t have that, so we are so very thankful. We would not have anything or be anything without Him!”
