The last man out had the final say steer wrestling at the College National Finals Rodeo in 2017. Southeastern Oklahoma State's Denver Berry was strong throughout the week-long affair in Casper, WY but never faster than in the championship round when he laid one down in 3.9 seconds on Saturday night. His father, Ote, is a four-time world champion bulldogger and a member of Pro Rodeo's Hall of Fame. You can imagine how proud papa is on this Father's Day but you don't have to because you will see it on his beaming face.

Tim Bingham and Trey Benton (III) have more than initials in common. They've each fought back from serious injuries in recent years and walked away from the Xtreme Bulls event that opened the Reno Rodeo on Thursday night with the best performances. Bingham is a former college national champion (Hill College)  bull rider from Utah. Benton is a Texan. Trey won Reno to collect more than $12K - 174.5 points on two head - with Bingham notching the high score of the night and second-place cash in excess of $8,000. We don't often have the opportunity to report on bronc riding and tell you the human contestant winner was Mrs. Doubtfire. Such was the outcome in the annual "Wild Ride" that caps the night competition at 62nd Ropin' & Riggin' Days Rodeo in Casper, WY. The college rodeo concludes with a Sunday championship round of actual events featuring student-athletes from Wyoming, Colorado and western Nebraska. Teams let down (or do up) their hair every year come Saturday night and put a lot of effort into their costumes. Mrs. Doubtfire ( Mason Mardesich) representing Otero Junior College faced stiff challenges from the likes of Batman and Mr. Kangaroo. For the latter we've included a subtitle since the University of Wyoming freshman, Kolt Ferguson, in that role is actually Australian.

The last rodeo of the 2016-17 college year in the Central Rocky Mtn. Region finds the Gillette Pronghorns on top of the women's competition and second in the men's therefore sending both as a team to the college national finals. Gillette freshman Quincy Segelke and sophomore Riley James Wakefield finished strong and each earned all-around honors for the region. Segelke won the championship round of goat tying Saturday night at the final regional competition hosted by the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Wakefield was the #1 steer wrestler for the night and overall this weekend. Each competes in several events. We'll have more from the Laramie finale but let's begin with the Pronghorn pair that proved to be the best cowgirl and cowboy in the Central Rocky Mountain Region this year:

The last college rodeo of the spring season in the Central Rocky Mountain Region started yesterday in Laramie hosted by the University of Wyoming (UW) whose women's UWYO Rodeo Team goes into the weekend #2 thus in a qualifying spot for the national finals. Gillette College Rodeo Team is way out in front of everyone in the women's competition with a lead of more than a thousand points over the field. A pair of their best is featured on our video highlights having finished first in two events at Ropin' & Riggin' Days in Casper last weekend leading the Pronghorn girls to another team victory. Sheridan College has a significant lead in the men's regional competition with Gillette in second place. The top two finishers advance as a team to the College National Finals Rodeo in June. Generals' bareback rider Hunter Carlson, a high school standout from Douglas, WY, won the Casper event and in so doing clinched the regional title for the year. His personal title information in our video is listed in black for a reason due to the redhead recently adopting a new look. We also have the winning Laramie County Community College (LCCC) steer wrestler from last weekend in Casper. Gage Greer is now just ten points out of the lead in the region behind Casper College's Jake Fulton. The top three individual finishers qualify for national finals berths. Central Wyoming College will more than likely have representation at the finals no matter what happens this weekend because Rustler steer wrestlers now occupy 3rd through 5th place in the region. A freshman bronc rider, Kolt Ferguson from Australia was high man in Casper spurring for the UW Cowboys. We begin with two Gillette girls who have proven to be the best in the region all season: Quincy Segelke and Rickie Engesser The rodeo concludes Saturday night with the Central Rocky Mountain Region champions and CNFR qualifiers decided.

Kyle Whitaker is the 2015 Linderman Award winner and the presentation was made in the Thomas & Mack Center during a break in the rodeo action Sunday night in Las Vegas. The relationship to Team Wyoming is simple and sadly tragic. Kyle was mentor to and traveling partner with Brady Wakefield who was killed in a traffic accident along I-80 over the Fourth of July. Brady was just getting started in the pursuit of his pro rodeo career while still on the Gillette College rodeo team. He proudly placed his “Wyoming” patch on his hat. Like Whitaker, Brady Wakefield was a three-event cowboy from Nebraska. Whitaker competes professionally in steer wrestling, tie-down roping and saddle bronc riding. You must win more than $1,000 a year in each event to qualify for the Linderman Award. This is Whitaker’s seventh Linderman – an unprecedented feat. He won the most bulldogging and the biggest check was from Cheyenne Frontier Days where Kyle took Brady’s place and therefore drew his steer. Whitaker won the second round at “The Daddy” and he did it for Brady. If you didn’t already believe in Divine Providence it would be hard not to after seeing Whitaker’s winning Cheyenne run. Cassidy Kruse turned 20 and turned a lot of heads in Omaha’s CenturyLInk Center last weekend by winning the barrel racing competition at the Justin Boots Championships. The Gillette, WY native and her horse JJ scorched for previous September wins at the Justin Boots Playoffs in Puyallup, Washington and at the New Mexico State Fair Rodeo in Albuquerque. Kruse completed the regular season reaching #8 in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings earning more than $81,000 in 2015. She spoke with us after her two Omaha runs:

The Exchange Race is a tradition for the Festival Western de St-Tite . "When they cheer for me I get a shock (of energy)," explains Dany Poirier at Saturday afternoon's performance of Festival Western de St Tite. Dany is a star competitor in the exchange race and a crowd favorite for feeding off of their energy and hyping up his performance before the run with face slaps and other enthusiastic antics. The exchange race is an event unique to Quebec and Canadian rodeo and unlike anything seen in America,

Funny thing about rodeo. Just when you are sure the big names of a particular event are going to sweep under the competition a relative unknown or two will rise above the rest. Many of the top bull riders in the PRCA’s world standings – Kimzey, Teel, Breding and Bownds to pick a few – were there to compete at the Elizabeth Stampede’s Xtreme Bulls event southeast of Denver Friday night. It was won by a young man known by few of his contemporaries and another one just out of college and currently 48^th in the standings riding a bull that has yet to be given a nickname. Pro Bull Stats gives Bryce Barrios, a resident of Texas, a ranking of 996^th among his peers. He was #1 in Elizabeth along with Ty Wallace from Collburn, Colorado and a recent grad of the college rodeo program at Odessa. Barrios made a quick exit following his Friday night ride but Wallace stuck around to visit with us. Each man won more than $3,800 for their 88-point scrambles. Amazing video of Amberley Snyder dismounting with the help of Ryan Lovendahl of Busby Quarter  Horses and removing the splint boots. Her horse seems to know to be still. "Power knows when to be quiet and when not to be," said Amberley of the horse that she has run for nine years.

Over the Memorial Day Weekend a whole new world opened for the Kanin Asay family. The 28-year-old bull rider from Powell, Wyoming launched what could very well become a career for his son Kasen. The Mighty Mouse II era began. Kanin went by the nickname Mighty Mouse early in his career. Kasen Asay is just three years old and built, shall we say, close to the ground. He stood tall for dad Kanin who brought the family to bull rider Josh Koschel’s Rodeo Bible Camp near Nunn, Colorado. Mom Sydney Asay was a little apprehensive but in total support of what her little man had in mind to accomplish on a mini-bull called Spud.
