story by Ruth Nicolaus

Calli Bauer loves to tie goats.
The Nebraska Junior High School Rodeo Association member loves the event because “it’s fun and very competitive,” and she rides her grandpa’s mare Buttons for it. The 12-year-old mare, a bay, is also her pole bending horse. In addition to those two events, Calli competes in the team roping (as a header for Jaden Mathis), the breakaway roping, and the ribbon roping (as a runner for Jake Chasek).
For the team roping, she rides another bay, Gunner, and for the breakaway roping, her family is in search of a new horse. Her breakaway horse, Maggie, died late last year.
The Arcadia, Neb. cowgirl is an eighth grade student at Arcadia Public Schools. She loves her ag class. At her school, all eighth graders are required to take a semester of agriculture, which includes them as FFA members. They learn about livestock, horses, range and land judging, and also about how to use tools. Her least favorite class is algebra.
Calli’s favorite teacher is her English teacher, Mrs. Dexter, because “whenever you have questions, she helps you. Whenever you need help, she’s there to help. She’s a good teacher and a really great person.” Mrs. Dexter is the seventh through twelfth grade English teacher, so Calli will be able to enjoy her throughout her high school career.
The cowgirl plays volleyball, basketball, and shows pigs, horses, and cattle in the Shooting for the Stars 4-H Club. For fun, she likes to play club volleyball and work cows. The family ropes together and with their friends, at their outdoor arena. She also likes to shoot hoops after school.
The Bauers have a pet Corgi, Rosco, and two pet cats: Marshmallow and Chocolate Chip.
When she grows up, she’d like to be either an agriculture teacher or a veterinarian.
She has an older brother, Clay, who is sixteen, and a younger brother, Colt, who is three. They like to pick on her, which includes tackling her.
She is the daughter of Wade and Vicki Bauer.
